Review: Prairie Artisan Ales Cherry Trogdor

Prairie’s second brewery-only release, Trogdor sold out incredibily quickly and since we were in Kansas City for the release, we totally missed out. Luckily there are amazing people on this planet like Freddy of Craft & Barrel and Chris of The Fur Shop (Trogdor is actually his cat) who hooked us up with a bottle for this review. Thanks, guys!

Justin, Kate, and I met up to share this fancy beer along with a pre-release bottle of 405’s FDR (that review is coming soon from Justin), so let’s see how it is!

Company: Prairie Artisan Ales

Location: Tulsa, OK.

ABV: 4%

Style/Description: Sour Ale in Oak Barrels with Montmorency Cherries

Price: $10 (375 ml bottle)

Appearance: Pours a cloudy pink, almost like pink grapefruit juice with light, pink head.

Nose: Cherry candy, watermelon, with some herbal grassy notes and chamomile.

Taste: Every time I take a sip I get a different flavor of red candy. At first it was cherry (obviously), then watermelon, then that strawberry candy that your grandparents always had…you know..the one that has the wrapper that looks like a strawberry…well it’s like the less-sweet goo in the middle of those. I love those candies. Anyways, the balance of candy sweetness and tartness is freaking perfect, and as it warmed some peppery, yeasty notes came out.

Finish: Like everywhere else, there’s a cherry candy sweetness here, and it’s accompanied by a buttery texture and some yeasty funk.

Overall: Damn. This is pretty fuckin’ good. Normally I don’t drop the F-bomb in writing, but that’s literally what a couple of us said after our first sip so I figured it was worth noting. I want to drink this all the time now, and I really hope Prairie makes more, and soon.

Rating: 4.5/5
