Review: Roughtail E-Juice IPA With Raspberries

I ran over to the Roughtail Brewery on a beautiful fall afternoon to again grab a few of their brewery only IPAs. This time around it’s a nice hoppy IPA brewed with a ton of raspberries and London yeast. Contains a whopping 42 pounds of raspberry puree per barrel, flaked oats and wheat and some lactose, in case all that other stuff didn’t make it thick enough for you. Hopped with Citra and El Dorado. This was going fast on Friday afternoon and sold out before the taproom closed at 9pm, so start texting your best beer friend for a can or visit the Roughtail taproom as they still have some on tap. Reviewed while super fresh, this was canned about 8 hours ago!

Style/Description: American Style IPA with Raspberries

Price: $12.00 per four pack

Appearance: Pours a deep cloudy pink pour. Thick and opaque, looks like ruby grapefruit juice.

Nose: Nice tart raspberry aroma, with plenty of hops aboard. Piney, grassy hops balance the sweet fruit in the nose.

Taste: Plenty of fresh raspberry flavor, sweet and sugary with some acidic tang. Nice bitterness from the hops that doesn’t really compete with the syrupy fruits. The hops impart some citrus peel, gripping grapefruit. The mouthfeel is super thick and creamy. All that puree and the oats come through and thicken it up. I was expecting a little more sour and tartness, but this puree is so fresh it hasn’t funked up at all.

Finish: Finishes with lingering raspberry, which slowly fades as the hops take over. The mingled fruit and piney hops remain on the palette for days, reminding me of the aftertaste of a very sweet wine.

Overall: An interesting brew, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect from a raspberry IPA, especially one made with English yeast and a ton of fruit puree. Turns out it’s super creamy and fruity, and the big time hops work well with the fruit. You may be wondering where they got the name “E-Juice.” Let this amazing video wash over your eyeballs.
