HangOn: A Strong Ale Tale

There seem to be an increasing number of brave men and women all across the world that are dedicating their lives to solving one of the largest problems facing today’s society. Hangovers hold us back as a people by diminishing productivity and keeping us bedridden even during the brightest of days. When Woke Products contacted us about trying their new hangover solution we knew it was time to take one for the team in the name of science and see how their product stacks up against others on the market.

The product is called HangOn, and is different than other hangover “cures” we’ve tried in that it’s something you eat, not something you drink. Per the product website “HangOn was engineered to optimize your body’s metabolism of alcohol by providing the liver with detoxification support. Based on the latest science, our proprietary formula contains 8 different amino acids and antioxidants, each working in conjunction to help you detox the night.”

Glancing through the ingredients we find the usual suspects in the hangover cure game. Dihydromyricetin and Milk Thistle pop up in pretty much every product out there as does Green Tea. We also see Taurine and various amino acids that should do some science-y things to protect your liver and make you feel good after a long night of delicious beverages.

The timing of receiving our sample of HangOn could not have been any better as it arrived just days before this year’s Strong Ale Fest, a beer festival hosted by the Craft Brewers Association of Oklahoma. The festival features over 30 breweries pouring a total of over 75 beers, all 8% abv or above. If that’s not an occasion for trying to prevent a hangover, I don’t know what is.

Per the instructions included with the pouch of chewable tablets, Kate and I each took two before drinking as we awaited our Uber driver. The flavor hit both of us immediately as the “refreshing citrus flavor” is really more like “the most sour thing you’ll ever taste”, reminiscent of a Warheads sour candy turned up to 11. Once we washed down the sourness with some water we were ready to rock.

I’ll be honest, I did a very poor job of staying hydrated during the festival. With so many amazing beers available I maximized our 3 hour window and tried as much as I could. Belgian strong ales, barrel-aged stouts, and strong ciders flooded my brain and we had a total blast talking to friends and enjoying the beautiful weather with the backdrop of downtown OKC and cloud-to-cloud lightning from distant thunder storms.

Upon returning home it was time for dinner and more drinks, obviously. Kate whipped up some tequila spritzers and the party continued. The HangOn manual’s 3rd and final instruction states “Two extra tablets for the heavy drinkers”, which I certainly was, so I chewed up two more for my dessert. I will say that the second pair was much easier to handle than the first as my palate wasn’t near as discerning at this stage in the evening.

I fell asleep watching Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, my final thoughts hoping that those four sour discs would save me from myself.

As I awoke I quickly took inventory of my physical and emotional state. I had a slight headache but surprisingly I felt alive. I was hungry, which is a great sign. I went on a kolache run, had some coffee, and within about 30 minutes of waking up I was very close t0 100%. With as much strong beer as I had the night before and the lack of hydration, I should be in worse shape.

Obviously these tests are hard as it’s near impossible to conduct identical tests when comparing products, but I will say that HangOn appeared to have done the trick. Luckily our sample pack has a couple more tablets left so I’ll get to try them again, but I’m going to call this one a success!

As always if you’ve tried this product, or anything else that worked for you, let us know and we’ll give it a shot. While these reviews are high risk, science demands it and we are here for you. Until next time, stay hydrated, be safe, and cheers.
