Barrels and Mash Survey Series: Will Quinlin

Welcome to the first edition of the Barrels and Mash survey series! We thought it would be fun to to ask some cool people some random questions and take a break from the hard-hitting and award-winning professional journalism that you have come to know and love from us here at Barrels and Mash.

Now that Oklahoma breweries can sell full strength beer directly to the public, chances are that you’ll be seeing more of your favorite local brewers as you visit their respective breweries for pints, growler fills, and brewery-only releases. So, it seemed like a good time to ask some of them a couple of questions so we can get to know them better and maybe arm ourselves with a nice icebreaker or two for when we find ourselves on opposite sides of the bar or wondering around their taprooms.

For this series, we sent 5 Oklahoma brewers the same set of random questions and will be posting them as they come back. Let’s do it!

The Man – Will Quinlin

will_quinlinThe Questions

What’s your name, and where do you brew?
Will Quinlin, Coop Ale Works

Do you have any kids? If so, which one is your favorite?
No kids. Favorite kid? Kid Koala

Which movie is better: Ghost or The Bodyguard?
Ghost. There’s so many more layers to the story, whereas if you look at the cover of your vhs copy of The Bodyguard, you know what happens

When not drinking beer, what is your go-to alcoholic beverage?
Lately I’ve been on a Campari kick, depending on how deep into the night it is, it’ll be a Campari and soda or a negroni

Look deep into your heart, do you still consider Pluto a planet? Why or Why not?
Yeah, I think they call it a dwarf planet now, so, still a planet. I honestly never gave a shit about Pluto, it’s always been barely holding on, just outdoing an asteroid. I like Saturn though, it seems like a planet you can trust

In your opinion, what’s the best beer town in America and why?
Okla..no, wait, not yet. I’m really digging Hood River, Oregon. It doesn’t have the most breweries, but between Double Mountain, Pfriem and Logsdon, you’ll be set. You’re also right on the river which doesn’t suck.

Do you have any unreasonable fears?
That Shawn Savuto will have control of the music at the brewery all day everyday. Luckily, this hasn’t happened yet. PTL

Of all the beers you have brewed, what is your personal favorite?
Man, it’s funny, my opinion on this changes a lot. Right now, it’s this beet pale ale I made years ago. I poured it at one of the first Mashed In events and most people were afraid of it, haha. I loved how the earthy sweetness of the beets played with the hops, that color was pretty badass too!

Of all the actors that have portrayed Batman over the years, which one is YOUR Batman?
Tough question. I have to go with Michael Keaton

What was the first beer you ever brewed?
I’m pretty sure it was a wheat of some kind. It was terrible, but we drank every drop of that under attenuated bottle bomb

Do you have anything you want to promote?
Roasted. Cauliflower. When you just brown the outside and it’s slightly crispy, pinch of good salt and pepper, you know you made something that’s riding the line between fiction and non-fiction. Heaven.

3 more brewers to go! Next up will be John Elkins from Elk Valley Brewing. If you have any suggestions on people to survey or questions to ask, feel free to let us know.
